Death is an inevitable part of our lives. However, it is still hard to accept and move on from. Butterfly Awakens: A Transformation Through Grief is a memoir by Meg Nocero. The authour walks us through her life from a very tender age. She grew up feeling like an outcast. She experienced the cruelty of schoolmates making her feel like she was not beautiful enough. Her mother, Mary Jo, was the anchor that kept her from sinking into depression. She kept her spirits high through middle and high school and all the way to college. She continued to be Meg's strong support system even after Meg got married and had her own children. Life takes another cruel turn for Meg when she learns her mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Roles are reversed and Meg has to be the anchor and support system for her mother while she fights the cancer. However, Mary Jo passes away and the author is left devastated.

Failing to deal with the grief and loss of the only person she felt truly understood her, Meg becomes withdrawn from everything and everyone around her. Her marriage, friendships, and career take a hit. She then decides to go on a spiritual pilgrimage in the hope of finding herself again. This book is a detailed account of how Meg has to come out of her cocoon, like the butterfly in her book title, and grow into whatever possibilities life offers her.

I loved and admired the relationship the author had with her mother. Usually when growing up, children tend to withdraw from their parents. Mary Jo was basically an anchor for her daughter even when she had grown into a beautiful and successful prosecutor and not the insecure person she used to be. I also admired how Meg had to be there for herself and her mother through her battle. I loved how optimistic she was even in a situation that seemed hopeless. She and her family never stopped looking for ways to help with Mary Jo's treatment. I was touched by the reaction Michael, Meg's son, gave after receiving the news about his grandmother's passing. He held onto his mother and let her know how much he loved her, a much needed comfort by the author at a time of such grief.

We all know that death is inevitable, but it does not make dealing with the loss of a loved one any easier. Spiraling out of control and sinking into depression is very easy at times like this. I admired how Meg's friends were there for her no matter how much she pushed them away. I applaud the author for gathering enough courage to write about the hardest and painful time of her life. Showing how she got through her darkest times could help someone going through a similar phase.

I loved reading this memoir. The emotions were so real and touching, even relatable at some points. I loved the lessons that came from this rather sad story. I loved how family always stuck together no matter what and tried to pull each other up. I enjoyed reading an error-free book. Butterfly Awakens was exceptionally edited. The author's vocabulary was not difficult to comprehend, and it was not too flat either. This book deserves 5 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this memoir to anyone who is suffering from grief and depression. Coming from someone who understands what it is like and someone who has gone through the same things can help you heal. I also recommend it to readers who like memoirs. Those who have lost loved ones can find this book relatable.
