To God Be The Glory! We Must Never Give Up!: This Is My Story Growing Up Black In America by Charles A. Wiley is an autobiography concerning the author’s experiences as a black man in the United States. This book spans from Wiley’s childhood years to his present adulthood and covers countless obstacles he has overcome during his lifetime.

Wiley’s character was forged from countless interactions, experiences, and conflicts. Even in the face of blatant racism, violence, and mental illness, he never gave up on creating some good in the world. He fulfilled this vision by growing into a loving husband, father, and friend, but also by founding the Black Positive Brothers. This organization represents everything that Wiley stands for. It focuses on providing resources and a community for at-risk young black men. After recruiting his family and friends, Wiley leads the Black Positive Brothers tirelessly, intent on granting its young members the resources they need to flourish as black men in America.

I have so many good things to say about this book. The most effective rhetoric that Wiley uses is probably his complete and utter vulnerability. He describes several formative events in his life that were very traumatic for him. Instead of giving his readers a watered-down version of these instances, he parses no words and shares from his heart. For me, this really proved his genuine and honest character and made me care so much more about his story and what he had to say.

I could not find anything major to criticize about this book. The only problem areas I found were a few minor misuses of quotation marks, but they were extremely small and not distracting. This leads me to believe this book was professionally edited.

Sensitive readers should be aware that this book contains mentions or depictions of violence and racist acts and speech.

Overall, To God Be The Glory! We Must Never Give Up!: This Is My Story Growing Up Black In America is an excellent read. I would recommend it to those who are struggling with prejudice in America and need a beacon of hope, or to those looking to learn more about just how prevalent racism still is in the United States. I have decided against deducting a point for the editing errors due to their extremely minor nature and the fact that there were so few of them. That being said, I rate To God Be The Glory! We Must Never Give Up!: This Is My Story Growing Up Black In America a perfect 5 out of 5 stars.
