With the recent economic uncertainty and pandemic concerns, thousands are researching ways to work safely from home in all manner of internet get rich quick ideas, often along several fronts simultaneously and of course there are now a myriad of books to help us find our way to reach larger and larger online markets. Niching Up by Chris Dreyer, a recent entry in this arena proposes a reversal of that view. His book discusses making your market actually smaller and smaller while thoroughly discussing the Pros and Cons of such an approach. Using his extensive career in online marketing and his own niching journey into SEO (ranking on search engines) for Personal Injury Attornies, Chris clearly explains the advantages and disadvantages of narrowing your market.

Niching Up is well organized with short chapters and generally efficient accessible language. The book explains a niche (or smaller market of a broad market) and gives a fulsome analysis of the pluses and minuses of such a plan. He also outlines the most effective way to discover your best niche and how to set yourself up for success in your own small world. Like many marketing books, Chris uses sports analogies, but also more memorable images (for those of us with less sports experience) from pop culture, Star Wars, Collectible Cards and Poker. Chris’ voice is personal and self-deprecating, which makes his success achievable for the regular guy. His focus on serving the customer well as a priority is refreshing in these jaded times. “The best advice I can give you if you want to get more referrals,” notes Dreyer, is to “be someone worth referring.”

With its brevity and clear summaries, the book seems to be geared for the novice, however the occasional overuse of marketing specific language is in direct contradiction to this goal. This one shortcoming does not deflect significantly from the benefits of the book for a newcomer or even a marketer experienced in other fields.

I am rating this book a 5 out of 5 stars for its appropriateness to the field of online marketing, affiliate marketing, e-commerce, and its general ease of reading and enjoyability. Additionally, this book was exceptionally well edited.

To my mind, Niching Up by Chris Dreyer, succeeds in all relevant categories regarding discovering, researching and marketing to niche markets, and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the fields of affiliate marketing, online marketing and e-commerce,
