A Dream For Peace by His Excellency Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is an autobiography documenting the political, personal, and religious experiences of the author. Born in Algeria, the author writes of his schooling, his introduction to leadership, and his eventual ascension into government. He has traveled extensively during his lifetime, once even spending time in a prison cell. His experience and wisdom qualify him to write about his political opinions and beliefs, and he always supports his views with evidence or logic.

This book is exceptionally written. Each chapter goes into great detail about a certain portion or theme of the author’s life, so readers will never feel as though the author is one-dimensional or not fully vulnerable in his writing. My favorite parts of this book were the personal conversations and relationships described. Even though the author is most prominently a political figure, he takes the time to gently and carefully describe those he cares about. Most specifically, he is a deeply religious man, a fact that is reflected in his writing. Although he is a practicing Muslim, he makes it a point to note that he treats all walks of faith with respect, and even documents his meeting with the Pope.

Something that I would recommend changing about this book was the sheer amount of content it contained. At 644 pages, this book took quite a while to get through, and I think that most chapters could be whittled down to be more concise, as oftentimes sentences appear to be much longer than necessary. I recognize that this is a matter of style, however, so I will not be docking any points off of the rating, but it is a recommendation that I think could make this book a lot more palatable for most readers.

This book appears to be professionally edited, as I only found two minor errors. Readers should be aware that there is a very brief conversation included in which the author expresses some very dated views on women, which might be controversial or offensive to some readers.

Overall, A Dream For Peace is a fantastically written documentation of a prominent political figure’s exploits. I learned much about world politics from reading this book, but its narrative structure made it much more fun and engaging than simply reading a textbook. I recommend this book to history buffs, or to people who are interested in politics or leadership positions. Due to its impeccable grammar and cohesive organization, I rate A Dream For Peace a perfect 5 out of 5 stars.
