Struggling for independence is a difficult task. One must be dedicated and self-determined to complete such a task. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's memoir, A Dream for Peace, describes the difficulties he and other freedom fighters endured during the colonial era.

The author was born in the Algerian province of Constantine, in the little hamlet of Ain Beida. Hamadi Berrah, his father, was a proud Saighi tribesman who loved to hunt and was renowned for his tenacity and bravery. He talked about his upbringing in Ain Beida and his large family. He also discussed how their professors forced them to study French as if it were their native language and culture. He described how his teacher had harassed him racially for the first time in a classroom setting. The author earned tremendous honors in high school. He got a full scholarship to study outside Algeria. He traveled to France to further his medical studies at the university level. He found the desire to fight racism and prejudice against Algerians and other individuals from conquered nations in France. Together with the hurdles they encountered in their quest for freedom, he also wrote about them.

In this book, I learned a lot. The author has published a great deal on the history and culture of Africa, especially Algeria. He informed readers about the determination of colonists to eradicate African culture. He also spoke on several African revolutionaries' struggles for political consciousness and freedom. The author included photographs of the occasions and places mentioned in the book. These pictures gave me a better understanding of the author's narrative and helped me grasp the mood he was trying to convey while writing this book.

I didn't find anything about this book to be unappealing. Freedom to do this and that is what we strive for. The quality of his character that I appreciated the most was his eagerness to strive for the things he had always sought. For instance, he defied his stepbrother's decision to become a teacher by choosing to pursue his goal of becoming a doctor instead. However, the author is more than just a medical professional; he is also a revolutionary ambassador, patriot, and politician. The author's patriotism is only one of many admirable values readers may adopt.

This book was incredibly well-written and carefully edited; it had no grammatical errors. Thus, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book will appeal to anyone who prefers to read about historical events and memoirs.
