Freedom and independence. These are two terms oft used interchangeably by many. They are used to express a state in which an entity is free from the influence of another. For countries, they show a state of self-governance. Are these terms synonymous? Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is born in Aïn Beïda at the foot of Aurès mountain in northeastern Algeria. He is born at a time when the French colonized Algeria. He, in his autobiography, A Dream for Peace details his years as a child and a youth. Born in a Muslim family, he tells of the schools he attended. He tells of what growing up under colonial oppression was like. He excels in his studies. He decides to join the medical school in Bordeaux, France, after excelling in high school at Laycée d'Aumale in Algeria. In university, he joins student organizations that hold demonstrations for the gain of Algerian independence. He later joins the guerilla warfare that sees the independence of Algeria in 1962. After Independence, he leaves for America. Here, he does some great scholarly work on biology. He later heeds his heart's call and resigns from Yale University faculty to come and attend to Africa. He lands in Côte D'Ivoire. Under President Houphouët Boygny, Dr. Berrah works as a diplomat for most of his life. He details the diplomatic missions he carried out. He had roles to play in the Israeli- Palestinian conflict, the liberation of several African states, and also other peace talks in Africa. He writes a perfect memoir of these and many more. Finally, Dr. Berrah writes about religion. He emphasizes the role of religious integration in achieving peace. He also emphasizes how dialogue can be used as an avenue to resolve conflict without resorting to violence regardless of one's affiliations.

This is a great autobiography. As stated in the prologue by H. E. Monsignor Justo Mullor Garcia, “In his autobiography, titled Mémoires d’Outre-Tombe, French writer François-René de Chateaubriand set a standard for memoirs that is hard to emulate.” In my opinion, Dr. Berrah has emulated and done more in this book. From the color and grayscale pictures to the supporting documents, especially the paper on RNA inhibition in bacteria, Dr. Berrah has put together a very detailed book. I also like the prologue by the nuncio Mullor and the end chapter by Dr. Berrah's wife. The book is written in the language of a true statesman, a man who is after peace through diplomacy. Finally, Dr. Berrah writes in a very chronological order. The events in his book gently unfold one into another. This makes the book fun and easily comprehensible.

There is no aspect of the book I dislike. The whole book is written in an attention-catching manner. It inspires great ambition to maintain peace. A Dream for Peace is a must-read for every peace-loving human on the planet!

I will rate A Dream for Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah with five out of five stars. I can't give a lower rating because this book exceeded my expectation. In the book, I noticed only one typo. This is not reason enough to deny this book a perfect rating. These memoirs are perhaps the greatest I have ever read. Dr. Berrah's life is a life of fulfilled ambitions.

I recommend A Dream for Peace to everyone who loves reading a good autobiography. This book inspires one to have a higher ambition in life. A reader who loves fictional books might quickly lose interest in the many world affairs that are deemed mundane by some. If you enjoy reading a good non-fictitious book, then get a copy of Dr. Berrah's book and acquire knowledge about most West African and African - Middle East matters.
