Review of A Dream For Peace
Algeria was once colonized by France, and this period of history had a significant impact on Dr. Berrah's life in various ways—academically, socially, and historically. When he was young, he lost his father and was raised by his mother alone. While still in high school, he faced an instance of racism that deeply troubled him, and he was motivated to take action against it. This ignited his passion for fighting against racism and advocating for freedom, particularly for his country. He received a scholarship to study medicine in France, where he organized various protests, movements, and groups to combat racism and discrimination.
However, things did not always go according to plan, and there were internal factors and individuals who wanted to terminate his scholarship and have him deported. Overcoming these challenges was no small feat, but Dr. Berrah persevered through them.
Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's memoir, A Dream for Peace: A Memoir, shares a deeply personal account of his life, including his reflections on the importance of followership, leadership, bravery, and the unwavering support of his mother and wife. Throughout the book, Dr. Ghoulem pays tribute to his mother, whose influence is evident in the dedication and whose passing is mourned in the text. The author also highlights the significant role his wife has played in his life, dedicating an entire chapter to her. Despite the challenges and hardships he has faced, Dr. Ghoulem's unwavering determination to bring peace and progress to Africa is a testament to his character and the enduring impact of his mother's influence. The book is a compelling and inspiring firsthand account of his life journey, from childhood to his current work, and offers valuable lessons on the importance of resilience, perseverance, and the support of loved ones.
The impact of his mother's ardent thirst for knowledge left an indelible mark on his life. It was remarkable to see how she insisted that he read and reread material multiple times, even when others in the family were educated. I was struck by the mother's insightful and exceptional parenting skills. The book was truly inspiring and had the potential to ignite generations with hope and motivation.
Throughout history, Africans have suffered from racial discrimination more than any other race. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah was among the few heroes who bravely stood up for their people despite facing persecution.
Nevertheless, I felt that the author's childhood background was not elaborated on adequately. The information provided was scanty and did not give a comprehensive picture of his upbringing. This won't affect the rating of this book, though.
The book has two errors, which indicates that it was professionally edited. I would give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I would recommend this book to every African leader. They could learn one or two from the author's exploits.
