Review of Always Strive to Be a Better You
Always Strive to Be a Better You: How ordinary people can live extraordinary lives by Pete Hall is a motivational self-help book to help live a happy, virtuous, and good life. The book discusses four main themes, or tenets: know thyself, work for love, let your light shine, and rule the day. Each of the tenets has a few key learning points—thirteen in all—spread across thirteen chapters. The first tenet is about focusing on introspection and identifying one's own strengths and weaknesses. The second one is about setting goals, making commitments, and developing habits to improve your life. The third tenet deals with optimism and taking positive steps. The fourth one focuses on seizing opportunities and making the right decisions to be in control of one's life. Seven successful people from various walks of life share their views, goals, strategies, and success stories with the author. They share their take on different aspects of life and how they overcame obstacles through perseverance, hard work, time management, and making the right decisions. The book delivers what it promises—goals to be set, simple yet effective strategies, and plans to act upon—all with motivation and helpful suggestions.
I liked the use of metaphors, especially that of the Cheshire cat from the story Alice in Wonderland, to explain a point and drive the message home. Facts and theories are supported by anecdotes, data, and theories from various sources throughout the book, thus making it both interesting and authentic. There are observation tables to fill, questions to answer, and decisions to make to fully understand the book and use it properly. It is not a "tips and tricks" type of book. It is a serious, interactive book that calls for action and will help the readers improve their lives. There is an emphasis on the importance of developing values like loyalty, gratitude, and pragmatism.
By including the poem The Bridge Builder by Will Allen Dromgoole, the author leaves a strong message: Be selfless and leave a legacy for the future generation by making this world a better place.
There is nothing to lessen the value or charm of the book; rather, there is a lot to learn from it. Breaks to pause and reflect, quotations from Plato and from various eminent psychologists, links to online references, and a table to practise time management—all these add to the value and usefulness of the book.
In my opinion, being an authentic, informative, and useful book, it should be part of every collection of books. The editing of the book is excellent, and it is absolutely free of errors. It is not a book to be read and forgotten, and I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
I would recommend this book to people who seriously want to make their lives better and are ready to take action.
