Review of Always Strive to Be a Better You
To be honest, I started reading this book expecting nothing more than the same old stuff I had already read elsewhere. But I was in for a huge surprise. Pete Hall’s Always Strive To Be A Better You is a thought-provoking book that sets the ‘self-help’ bar very high. It presents a practical way of going about making a real difference, starting from where you are right now.
Always Strive To Be A Better You offers a practical approach to the pursuit of happiness. Throughout the book, the author refers to it as ‘a happy, virtuous, good life’ or simply ‘the pursuit of –er’. It sets you off on a self-discovery journey by asking important questions about whom you are and what you want to achieve in life. The author identifies selflessness, fellowship and community as the key ingredients for genuine success, the kind that is immeasurable in financial terms. He does this by drawing anecdotes from the lives of seven ordinary people who managed to achieve this sort of success in their various endeavours. These amazing people’s stories provide thirteen life lessons grouped into four main tenets namely Know thyself, Work for love, Let your light shine, and Rule the day.
For me, telling life stories of ordinary people battling the same struggles as the rest of us was the highlight of the book. It made the concepts much more relatable to my own situation. I also liked the ‘Pause and reflect’ sections placed after particularly important discussions. Each one got me involved in the process, nudging me to take necessary action without delay. The book is a refreshing departure from common clichés often regurgitated in similar books. It redefines success to emphasize its impact on families and communities. Besides, the book seeks to create responsible citizens who are inspired to serve others before themselves. It contains such a powerful message that the world needs to hear and practice.
Between the powerful lessons and Pete’s funny jokes about card games’ banter, I didn’t find anything not to like. Pete Hall’s writing skills plus professional editing rendered the book error-free. Of course, I noted some clever made-up-words like ‘mision’, ‘powerometer’, and ‘sticktoitiveness’. But that was Pete intentionally emphasizing certain points with a bit of poetic creativity.
I rate Always Strive To Be A Better You 5 out of 5 stars. Its unique message, great writing style, and professional editing made reading the book a rare joy. I recommend the book for anyone who is serious about achieving life-changing goals.
