8 Disasterous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humorous Memoir by Poppy Mortimer is a humorous account of the author’s difficulties with her love life. It is amusing and heart-warming. In this book, the author describes her disastrous dates, the insights she has gained from them, and how she moved on from each experience.

I liked how the author made use of her optimistic attitude to turn her possibly depressing experiences into a compilation of tales that are both educational and emotional. I loved the underlying feminist tones. Feminist literature doesn’t always have to be about being a strong independent woman, or not needing a relationship with men. Sometimes, it can be about making choices, wanting respect, and valuing self-worth. I also appreciated the trigger warnings on chapters which may contain difficult content.

There’s not much that I didn’t like about this book! My negative feelings about it come from the disgust I feel towards the men that Mortimer dated. She seems to have been a magnet to an unusually substantial number of strange men, and it reminds me of the horrors of online dating. Somehow Mortimer comes across the negative side of each man she meets, which can sometimes seem unrealistic. However, this is the intention of the book, and it is well-executed.

The author’s writing style is clear, relatable, and witty. The editing of this book is professional, and I found no writing errors.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. This is because of the humorous tone, the engaging ideas, and the all-round comedic value. I would recommend it to any woman currently searching for a date, or even a woman comfortably in a relationship. I’d even recommend it to men for tips of what not to do on a first date! It’s a light, easy read for anyone looking for something relatable and surprising.
