Review of Addressing Systemic Discrimination by Reframing the Problem
Combating discrimination anywhere is setting up diversity, inclusion and equity programs and implementing the processes to reach the objectives the programs were meant to address. Despite the presence of these diversity programs in companies and organizations, individuals belonging to minorities still complain of being discriminated against. Any company or business pursuing its goals and objectives in today’s modern and global world will adopt the Equity, Inclusion, and Individual Engagement Principle. This book, Addressing Systemic Discrimination by Reframing the Problem by Dr. Frank L. Douglas, is to help readers identify cases bordering on equity and inclusion within their work environment, organizations and society. The book offers the Safe Haven Dialogues Reframing Process as a tool to document, analyze and provide a solution for discriminatory conditions encountered by individuals within their workplaces. Are you aware of how a psychologically toxic workplace impacts your well-being?
The practice of discrimination could be based on race, societal status, boss and subordinate, and so many other reasons. This book offers a way for the affected individual to quickly identify and categorize how discrimination is encouraged within the workplace and society. Moreso, it provides strategies the individual can apply to continue being engaged meaningfully within the organization or, as the case may be, leaving the company in extreme situations. The author profoundly explains the indicators that differentiate the different psychological states, as presented in the equity-inclusion matrix, that any individual could be experiencing within an organization.
Addressing Systemic Discrimination by Reframing the Problem is divided into two parts. The first part has two chapters introducing the reader to the topic and the components that determine equality and inclusion, which are necessary for the Safe Haven Dialogue Reframing Process. The second part of this book contains eighteen cases of systemic discrimination, written using the Safe Haven Dialogues Reframing Process. Using the SHD Reframing Process, each case is presented like a story outline and is much easier. The author mentions some research and reports, for example, the Gallup 2020 report, that prove that organizations that implement the equity and inclusion principle, which are necessary for employee engagement, perform better than others who do not.
I loved the illustrations included in this book which further clarified the idea being expressed example, the Venn diagram showing the equity-inclusion intersection. I also enjoyed reading the cases in part two of this book as I could identify and categorize most microaggressions within this book and in my everyday interactions with others. This book, although short, encourages the reader to make realistic choices by analyzing their situations and developing ways to be engaged while focusing on the overall goal.
There is absolutely nothing I did not enjoy while reading this book. Although few typographical errors were seen while reading, it has no negative impact and proves that this book is professionally edited, and I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
This book is recommended to all employees, employers and individuals migrating from their home country. The Safe Haven Dialogues Reframing Process encourages readers to follow the proper decision-making process when faced with systemic discrimination.
