Reconfigurement , by E. Alan Fleischauer, is about showing people how to best plan for their retirement. Fleischauer, a financial advisor, is reaching out to the middle-aged, although he concedes that even older people can reconfigure their lives by referencing this book. He points out that traditionally people have focused only on such financial strategies as investing and saving when planning for their retirement. He says that career planning should be a part of this strategy as well. Because seniors can expect to live many years into retirement, they may need jobs to help them financially while others may seek employment because they desire to work. For those considering what work to do, he advises that they take a work value assessment. He mentions several that can be found online.

In addition to career planning, life insurance is another area that people need to explore when considering their retirement plans. They not only need to decide how much, but which type of insurance: whole life, universal, or variable universal. Another area of interest to retirees is to find out more about Social Security and how it functions. This knowledge can help them make better decisions that can result in much more money for them. The author also shows how investments can be another way to prepare financially for retirement. Some of the investments he discusses are various types of funds and bonds, as well as 401ks, and IRAs. He points out that more people are turning to 401ks and IRAs since pensions are no longer as popular as they once were.

Since people are living longer, they will need to prepare for more years of medical care. Medicare, the government-sponsored medical insurance for the elderly will be there for the seniors. However, the author emphasizes that people should be aware of the different parts of Medicare and how to go about finding which coverage they need. Medicaid, another government program, may be especially helpful for seniors who require long-term care. Since people are now living longer, there is more need for long-term care. Some of these types of care include nursing homes, assisted living, home health aides, and adult day care. The author believes that people should take the expense of these types of care into account when planning their retirement.

I like this book because it contains a great deal of helpful information for those who are planning their retirement. I also like the way he includes humorous anecdotes and wise sayings throughout the book to help educate as well as entertain the reader. I am giving the book 5 out of 5 stars because it is well-written and contains helpful information that is easy to understand. I believe the author succeeds in showing people how to achieve a great retirement by reconfiguring it to include more than just the traditional financial objectives.
