The Fight for Sleep by Thad R. Harshbarger is a self-help book for people suffering from sleep disorders that is written in a way that allows us to identify and treat the sources of insomnia as quickly as possible. The book is initially titled Your Sleep Map; it assumes that as long as people receive the information, many people can identify and solve their own insomnia issues. As opposed to how most self-help books either: provide one answer that they claim will work for everyone or offer a list of answers and leave it there; this book is organized around decision points where people might make different decisions because we all lead different lifestyles. The easiest way to describe this book is that it is like talking to a trained professional, who asks a lot of questions to get to the heart of the issue and from there make suggestions for the treatment.

This book was a joy to read, and I truly believe that anyone who suffers from sleep disorders will have something to gain by reading this book - may it be the cure to our sleep disorders or a better idea of what causes our issues. The author's writing style is straightforward and easy to understand. Not to mention his sense of humor certainly helps to lighten the tone of the book even further. Another positive aspect is that the author includes a lot of figures and pictures to give us an idea of how we can arrange our own sleep diary. It really helps the organization of the information in my mind.

The drawback of this book is that I found some typos in it so it can certainly do with another round of revisions. Some parts also seem repetitive to me, however, this most likely will be a positive point for people reading the book the way it should be read — which is point to point — as this means the author tried to make each part as comprehensive and as informative as possible.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because there were less than ten errors and the rest of the book is perfect in my opinion. People who suffer from sleep disorders will benefit from reading this book, however the author is a clinician and only provides a clinician approach to it, if you are searching for a more science-focused approach this book may not be the right fit for you as it only includes enough scientific information to support the suggestions and back up the research he has made.
