In The Pursuit of Miss Ann by Victor Stewart, we read the story of Leroy, a black man living in the South in the 1950s, and his thoughts and relationships with white girls. We know the protagonist as a boy. At that young age, it is Amber, a white girl, who arouses in him very different feelings from those he experiences when he is with his black friend, Annie Mae. Leroy will continue to be attracted to white women throughout his life, even after he gets married. How will it end for Leroy?

The Pursuit of Miss Ann is a short and interesting book, although it is not flawless. I appreciated that it deals with a theme such as black-white relations in the South and that Leroy is a complex character who has feelings he should not have. I also liked that he wonders if his attraction to white women depends only on the fact that they are a "forbidden fruit" (as his mother tells him). It seems to me that this detail makes the narration very realistic.

Many details need to be summarized, but since the author's aim is to write a short book, I understand the need not to dwell too much on side characters and situations. Therefore, the character that stands out the most is inevitably Leroy, which ensures that readers never forget who the protagonist is. I think Stewart was right to give him prominence in this way because we always see things from his point of view.

The last thing I want to note about this book is a negative one. I am referring to typographical errors, as I noticed quite a few while reading. Also, I have to point out the strange use of commas in some sentences. Moreover, some parts (which are dialogues between the characters) were not between inverted commas. This confused me and made my reading less enjoyable.

Overall, I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. It is a good read, and I believe that, for the subject it deals with, it could be interesting for many. However, I cannot give it a higher rating because of the typographical errors and the lack of clarity in some parts. I recommend The Pursuit of Miss Ann to those interested in racial issues, and I hope its flaws do not prevent readers from appreciating the story.
