Wonderful, electrifying, and suspenseful. I couldnt put it down once I began to read. This is the true story of the men & their families from the Chilean mine disaster in 2010. If you recall, 33 men were trapped by a major disaster for a record breaking 69 days. The story & updates were on the news & in the papers everyday. What we didnt know was what happened to the men while trapped. They made a pact, that if they were rescued, none of them would speak to the media, they would wait & tell their story together, so that they would all share in any profit. Hector Tobar, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, was chosen by the miners to tell their stories to the world. Tobar brings these stories to life, shows us what its like to work in a mine, and then begins with the horrors of being trapped inside the mountain. The families had no idea if the miners were dead or alive, and I got the feeling if it was up to the mine Company, they would have left them for dead and cut their losses. But the families camped out at the mine, contacted media, and the government. What follows was an international attempt to reach the miners, dead or alive. This is a true story, about what happened, who did what, how the men kept both their hopes and bodies alive, and what happened to them after their rescue. After finishing the book, I went to a lecture by the author. I wanted to hug him, and thank him for bringing the rest of the story to the world. I feel like I personally know each of the miners, and hope to follow them for the rest of their lives.
