[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "A Shotgun Wedding" by Philip S. Radcliffe.]
To understand our physical world better, a shotgun wedding or coerced union is necessary between two opposing forces: science and religion. A Shotgun Wedding by Philip S. Radcliffe is a non-fiction book that discusses how religion and faith should be reconciled in order to build a stable and harmonious world. Reviewing scientific facts relevant to cosmology, astronomy, biology, and physics and disputing criticisms of God and Christianity, Radcliffe offers an enlightening book that seeks to resolve conflicts between science and religion.
This piece adds to the plethora of books seeking reconciliation between science and faith. The author is a creationist but acknowledges that theology needs to be updated to adjust to the modern world. His take on the whole topic stems from the idea that we should marry both domains in order to achieve a more harmonious world. It is necessary to coerce the unity of the two, hence the parallel to a shotgun marriage. What I like the most about the book is the fact that the approach is more philosophical than scientific; it makes the reading experience less tedious. There is adequate research to support some scientific claims in the book, but they do not dominate much of the book's content.
As an agnostic, it is inevitable to be skeptical of many of the author's assertions. But with an open mind, it won't hurt to sometimes hear some of the arguments from the other side. I do not have any negative issues with the writing. Errors of some sort are absent in the text, so I can vouch for the book's exceptional editing quality. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because I like the philosophical approach to the topics and do not have any objective criticisms. Readers who are into thought-provoking pieces involving the union of science and faith should find this book worth a read.
