Review of 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir
28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir is a book about a woman's hapless dating experiences. These dates occur over twenty years and take place in England, the United States, and Australia. The author, Poppy Mortimer, seeks to inform women of some of the pitfalls of dating and to help them learn from her experiences. Although this desire to inform is her main point, the humorous writing style she uses is vastly entertaining and gratifying. For each of the 28 dates, the author describes how they met, what happened on the date, and what lessons she learned from the experience. As the author describes how she first meets her dates, the reader not only learns something of the perils of online dating but also the problems of traditional in-person dating. Although most women expect online dating to have a certain amount of surprises and deceptions, the men she meets in other ways have their share of problems as well.
The author believes that a lot of these bad dates are partially caused by how women are brought up to excuse the bad behavior of men. In many situations, she finds herself reluctant to hurt her date's feelings. One of the lessons she learns is that she should say something, react more forcefully, or just leave. She wants women to know that relationships need balance and that both the man and woman should equally show concern and consideration for the other person.
The author's personality traits may have also contributed to the outcome of these dates. She admits that she is an adventurous person who revels in the excitement of speed and danger. She enjoys motorcycling, jet skiing, and going on extreme thrill rides.
She keeps saying that a one-hour coffee date may be best for a first date, but her adventurous personality causes her to pursue more exciting dates.
Despite the many failures in her dating life, the author's work life has thrived. In her twenties, she started a dog-walking business and wrote a successful book on dog psychology. While in Los Angeles she completed her master's degree, and after moving back to Australia, she became a business consultant.
What I liked most about the book was how the author used humor in describing her ordeals in the dating world. I found the stories to be hilarious. The only thing I disliked about the book was the language differences between American, British, and Australian words. As an American, I had to stop and translate the meaning of some of the words and phrases. But this was a minor problem, and not enough to deduct any points from the rating. Since the book was written exceptionally well and the editing was flawless, I am giving it 5 out of 5 stars. The author succeeds in helping women to understand some of the problems with dating in today's society. She also shows them ways they can improve their own dating experiences.
