Review of Niching Up
Niching Up: The Narrower the Market, the Bigger the Prize is a marketing and business book written by Chris Dreyer. The book focuses on the process of niching and all of the potential positives, as well as, negatives that niching can offer you. In the book, Chris discusses the seven disadvantages and seven advantages, whilst detailing his own experiences, of niching up and working in a smaller market that specialises in search engine optimisation for Personal Injury Law Firms. While detailing his own experiences, Chris helps the reader learn from his mistakes as well as his successes.
I very much enjoyed reading this book and I would rate it five out of five stars. There are several reasons for my high rating, the first one being that I appreciated that Chris was very honest throughout the book. For example, the seven disadvantages of niching were set forward in Chapter One, which was very helpful as the reader can decide, at the start of reading, if the cons are too big for them to look past or if they will be able to stick through them to get to all the pros. This makes it a more efficient reading experience, as nothing is sugar-coated.
Additionally, throughout the book, Chris would give the reader question prompts to consider, to figure out if niching would be helpful and successful within their business, as niching is not a fit for everyone. Alongside this, multiple other books, by a range of authors, were mentioned in each chapter. I found this extremely helpful when I wanted to get a better understanding and learn more about niching and all the other factors that surround it.
I also enjoyed that Chris would address the reader directly within the book, giving it more of a conversational tone, which kept you engaged. In addition, throughout the book, Chris would teach through anecdotes making it easy to follow, and understand and help with information retention.
I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in starting a business or is already a business owner and is considering the route of niching but doesn’t know the first steps to it or if it would be a proper fit. Or to anyone that just wants to understand why niching is so valuable. Overall, the book has been really well written and exceptionally well edited and I didn’t find any flaws within the book or how it could be improved.
