Meg Nacero is a federal immigration attorney who comes from an Italian American family and who wrote a memoir entitled Butterfly Awakens which was inspired by the unfortunate death of her loving mom. Her mother died of breast cancer.

Her memoir starts with details of her childhood which was full of challenges and trauma because of bullying from her schoolmates that left her feeling inadequate. As we can see, her childhood difficulties did not deter her from getting a good education; with help from her mother, she went on to play an important role in the government. It’s during this phase of her life while employed by the federal government that her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer-a diagnosis that would change their lives forever. She and her family members tried all sorts of treatments for their mother- non-traditional as well as alternative, unfortunately, nothing seemed to work because she succumbed to her illness. The grief would hit Meg particularly hard because her mother was very close to her-her biggest support system. It affected every aspect of her life –it impacted her mentally, her career suffered, and even her marriage.

It is during her grieving period that she was forced to reevaluate her career which had stagnated for a while due to gender discrimination despite her being good at her job and for this reason and the grief, she made a difficult decision to resign from her job. Having tried everything to improve her grief process including meeting some inspirational figures like Oprah Winfrey and Liz Gilbert, the author of Eat, Pray, Love, to even trying writing without finding a real breakthrough, that's when she decided to take a pilgrimage to El Camino Spain. The trip was a life-changing adventure that allowed her to fully embrace her reality and find inner peace.

I like the fact that; even though Meg's memoir is more about grief, it also serves to highlight many other issues faced by women. She touches on issues such as gender discrimination in the workplace, there is an issue of lack of support from spouses when you need them, the importance of maintaining close relationships with friends and family. I also really enjoy reading her well written and engaging books, Meg has the capacity of explaining events so vividly and with such vulnerability that you feel every emotion as she was feeling.

I tried, but I couldn’t find anything negative about the memoir, I doubt that anyone can find any. As I had mentioned earlier it is well narrated and it will be a big help to those who are suffering; By reading this book they will have hope like Meg articulated in Page 17, para 2:” And my hope is that by being open with my journey through personal loss, health challenges, and professional struggles—and overcoming these adversities—my story will serve as a ray of hope for anyone struggling to find their own light at the end of the tunnel”. Therefore, I give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

Anyone who is struggling with a loved one's illness or grief can benefit from reading this book.I also believe that any person who is finding it difficult to make changes in their life because of the fear of the unknown can find inspiration in the book.
