Addressing Systemic Discrimination by Reframing the Problem is a book by Frank L. Douglas that takes a critical look at systemic discrimination in the workplace suffered by Blacks. It is extensive research by the author, covering the problems as well as the solutions. It offers an angle on discrimination and racism that is rarely talked about. Discrimination as a problem has evolved, and the author thoroughly addresses it as it applies to the workplace in this book.

I particularly enjoyed the case of Dr. JD. She was the attending physician at her hospital's emergency department, yet she had her authority undermined by Dr. H, a resident who was her subordinate. Dr. H discharged her patient without informing her and assaulted her by aggressively grabbing her hand while blocking her from talking to her patient. Dr. JD's case stood out to me because it shows, as with all other cases in this book, the extent of systemic discrimination in the American system. The views of a white resident doctor who is subordinate to the black attending physician are considered above hers. He is not given a punishment that befits his crime, and she is left feeling unappreciated and undermined by a subordinate.

Another aspect I appreciate about this book is the comprehensive format in which the author presents this topic. He takes a critical look at each case, outlining the problems and presenting solutions specific to each case.

There is nothing to dislike about this book; the author covers the topic comprehensively, the editing is flawless, and I did not find any errors while reading. I rate this book five out of five stars. It not only points out problems but also presents solutions.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been exposed to workplace discrimination and is looking for tactful ways to handle the situation. I also recommend this book to academics and people willing to read and learn about systemic discrimination.
