Gastro Grilling by Ted Reader
If the recipe titles aren’t enough in GASTRO GRILLING to whet your appetite, the pictures will…and if that doesn’t do the trick the author’s credentials certainly will seal the deal. Ted Reader is the current Guinness World Record holder for the largest burger ever grilled at 590 lbs. Seriously, how can you argue with that? His combination of heartfelt recipe introductions, gour-met ingredient suggestions, advanced grill-skills & techniques, “Ted Tips” and details for meat selections make Gastro Grilling all a weekend warrior needs to become an impressive master griller.
As in some of my other book reviews, review partner Adrianne Morrison weighed in. This seems apropos as she is one enthusiastic griller herself. I tend to be more the organizer of recipe and product, but leave the grilling to my husband. This book speaks to both of those skill levels. I re-viewed the (substantial) softback version of the book ($25.00). Adrianne reviewed the Kindle ($18.99) version. Both versions are easy to read and meant for people who already know their way around a grill. I think we both agreed the softback is one good-looking cookbook. It could easily be left out on the coffee table for guests to look through and certainly is an outstanding host/ess gift or holiday present.

If S&P, garlic powder, Lawry’s Seasoning and/or Worcestershire sauce are the extent of your everyday barbequed steak or chicken seasoning then this cookbook will introduce you to a whole new weekend staycation grilling adventure as you work your way through tempting Party Starters,Side Kicks, Sandwiches, Meat, Poultry, Fish & Shellfish, Drinks and Desserts.
Do you remember the movie, “Julia and Julia” where the young less experienced Julia cooks her way through Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.” Well, if you fancy yourself a pret-ty good griller, I challenge you to grill & blog your way through these recipes.
I admit as soon as I received this book I skimmed ahead… Grill Roasted Whole Beef Tenderloin with Spiced Whiskey Butter Injection (P. 182)…Yum! I see a dinner party menu forming.
Imagine your friend/lover/sibling holding open the Espresso Crusted T-Bones with Gorgonzola Cheese recipe (P.177) for you, then searching for a Post It or napkin to hold their place because they can't resist turning the pages, showing you pictures, exclaiming over the ingredients and then deciding together what you will conquer next. “The Grill-Baked Chocolate Peanut Butter Cof-fee sounds good for desert. How about the Grilled Apricot Cheesecake Quesadilla with Lavender Honey? (Yahoo! This is so how I love to entertain… cooking together

The true purpose of the first gastro pubs in the UK were to raise the typical bar food served so that even the most discerning palate would be impressed. This book does the same thing for the backyard grill master. Look on page 3 to find out how to buy the best charcoal and what to do with it.
If you haven’t used a wooden plank in your grill kingdom, you’re missing out. If you’ve used one and it flamed out on you-- then page 11 will set you straight on the real way to do plank grilling.
What exactly is Gastro Grilling Etiquette? I can give you a hint – don’t touch someone else’s grill without permission. To get the rest, you’ll need to buy the book.
Why save the lobster shells once you’ve removed the meat? It’s in the book on page 60.
What beverages (beyond beer and wine) should be served? There’s a whole chapter on that, but I think you’ll love the Black Spiced Lemonade and Maple Bourbon Carrot Iced Tea. Need more? Buy the book, just sayin.
Let me leave you with one of the author’s most interesting pieces of advice, “Don’t feel obligated to invite your neighbors, not all parties require your neighbors.” Other ideas on taxis, vegetarian options, the perfect basting brush and how to season a brand new grill are peppered throughout the book.
