Review of The graveyard and other poems
Grief is an ever-lurking neighbor, one that creeps up at the most random times. Grief is the friend that visits every single one of us in the middle of the night, filling our dreams with visions of cemeteries and the afterlife. Grief is more than a fleeting feeling, one that is ironically difficult to explain and illustrate despite everyone’s familiarity. In efforts to make sense of it, a lot of us have resorted to using our words and creativity. Anything that helps us explain it is a gift.
The graveyard and other poems is a collection of poems by Mae Bea Sayes that explores death, the afterlife, and the neighborhood of corpses. This book is a collection of everything that runs through everyone’s head and also depicts the other stories that these people have died with. In what I believe is an attempt at illustrating that grief is not alone in its lurking, Sayes also includes poems about her own life and childhood.
I would easily recommend this book to fans of poetry and literary fiction. Sayes writes in a very poignant manner that I believe would be best appreciated by those who enjoy literary analysis and looking between the lines. I would also recommend this book to those who are interested in the afterlife, the soul, and overall spirituality. Despite this, however, I would still say that this book is suited for all religions as it is more about spiritual beliefs. In contrast, those who are grieving or have difficulty processing death may want to avoid reading this book until they are in the right mental capacity.
It is safe to say that there is nothing I disliked about this book. I have always been a fan of expanding my vocabulary and analyzing literary texts, and this collection of poems was a treat. The difficulty of this book forced me to take my time to read, but I do not think there is anything wrong with that. I believe the difficulty is very symbolic of how difficult it is to put these experiences and beliefs into words, and I greatly appreciate how this was done in this book. For those who are worried about coming across pieces that are beyond their current reading level, the poems progressively get simpler by the end of the book.
I would say that this was an emotionally and mentally captivating read and that I enjoyed my time with this book. This book was also exceptionally edited, as I did not find any errors. For this reason and the reasons above, I rate this book five out of five stars.
