Review of Death by Ego
In this book, Death by Ego, David M. Carlson tells us of his experience in the business world for about 25 years. He uses this medium to describe some mistakes entrepreneurs make that mar the success of their businesses. He also tells us about the few entrepreneurs who got it right, highlighting their steps so we can emulate them.
His objective for this book is quite straightforward: to let potential investors know common characteristics entrepreneurs share so that investors may make better-informed decisions and insist on strong governance. He also sought to provide true stories about entrepreneurs who failed their companies in order to provide material for entrepreneurial study programs. He also aimed to draw entrepreneurs’ attention to tendencies that may jeopardize their success and the success of their companies.
Death by Ego was a lovely read. The first thing I observed and loved were the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. The quotes foreshadow what to expect in the rest of the chapter. These quotes were mostly proverbs and wise words, so I was grateful for them. Also, the sequence of each chapter was nice and made room for easy understanding.
Furthermore, the citations and facts at the end of the book helped me get more knowledge of the different cases I read about, leading to a place of understanding. Additionally, I followed the author's objectives for this book, which I believe were accomplished. With his stories, entrepreneurs will be able to make better-informed decisions. Finally, I found no typographical or grammatical errors. This helped me have an uninterrupted flow as I read this book, which improved my appreciation of it.
My least favorite thing about this book is the list of facts at the end of the book. I would have preferred that each one relating to a particular story be placed behind the chapter containing the story. This would have made it easier to understand. I found having those facts at the end of the book tiring. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the book.
I would rate this book five out of five stars. There was no compelling reason not to rate it this high. Also, I could not get myself to remove a star from my rating because of the positive aspects mentioned above.
I recommend this book to business-oriented people and entrepreneurs; they should read it. I will also encourage anyone who plans to go into the business world to read this book; it will help you make better decisions.
