28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humorous Memoir by Poppy Mortimer chronicles the trauma of her dating life. Mortimer gives a play-by-play of her dating misfortunes over 20 years as she relocates across the world. She documents her self-development and career accomplishments while she fails to find love. Right when you think this one might be the one, something utterly crazy and unexpected happens.

If all my dates took a complete and unexpected turn, I would be writing a book about it too. The writing style, the wit and the sheer humiliation of the men made this book an absolute joy. This writer was very creative in the way she structured her chapters. Very systematic and to the point. I loved that she took each bad experience as a teachable moment to apply in further dates. Regardless of the outcome of each encounter, she always looked to the future and stayed optimistic.

I realized some situations may have been exaggerated for comedic purposes because in some cases the ‘datee’ made the date even worse. Sometimes she came off as pretentious, judgmental and unwilling to make the best out of a bad situation. Don't get me wrong, most of the characters were certainly not worth the effort. This did not take away from the enjoyment of the book. I totally loved her retelling of the fart orchestras and curry bathroom explosions.

This book earned a 5 out of 5-star rating. Everything about it was enjoyable. The censoring of all the colorful words was quite refreshing and left it up to the readers' imagination. I found no errors in editing which made the book that much better.

I have no recommendations for this author. Furthermore, I couldn't have done it better myself. This book was lighthearted, fun and a good break from the crime/thriller genre.
