This is an excellent book written for grandparents raising their grandchildren. I found no sexual content, nor did I find any grammatical or typographical errors. That was quite unusual. I rate this book a 5 out of 5.
The author starts with speaking about herself and her family, including her grandchildren. Unfortunately, there is an incident that requires her and her husband to raise their two grandchildren, one boy and one girl, who are twins.
She talks about the emotions, such as anger, pain, shock, grief and the worst of all, guilt. Guilt is an overriding emotion that creates its own set of thoughts and brings on self-blame. Now it becomes wounded grandparents raising wounded grandchildren. Sacrifices had to be made, goals changed, and their daily living turned into a totally different lifestyle.
Mrs. Hodgson gives excellent tips on how to deal with the many different emotions by focusing on self-care during this process. Although there were home rules to follow for the children, the grandparents tried to remain very flexible, because the children were also dealing with the same emotions.
One of the best tips was to remember to have fun, to have some excitement and adventures, so that the grief and pain are not always primary in the children’s lives. She told many personal stories about her time with her grandchildren before and after the incident, including what the grandchildren are doing today. They are both currently enrolled in college as honor students.
During this time, Mrs. Hodgson’s husband also suffered from a medical incident and she became his caregiver as well.
This book was written with passion, empathy, and a true understanding of walking in love during a most tumultuous situation, where the only control they had was to accept the responsibility before them with love. One of her final quotes in the book is, “Love surmounts troubles and lasts forever.”
This book gives support to all those who have accepted the responsibility, by giving many tips, ideas, thoughts, links to various websites, resources for additional help, and all with a sensitive touch of hope and light humor.
