Review of Reconfigurement
E. Alan Fleischauer is a financial consultant. In Reconfigurement, he insists that planning finances for life after retirement should be started early in the career. This planning is termed Reconfigurement.
Life expectancy has increased due to advancements in medical science. So has the period of life one spends in retirement. This puts a financial burden on a retired person. Add the medical expenses related to old age to this list. What you will get will not be the retired life of your dreams, full of golf, gardening, or soaking in sand, water, and sun. Instead, you will get anxiety-driven illnesses and more medical bills to deal with them.
The author has explained how to plan for retirement by providing an exhaustive list of investment plans, medical insurance plans, life insurance plans, disability insurance plans, etc. He has completed it with talks on wills and trusts. What I found most impressive in the book was that finding a suitable and enjoyable career while keeping the retirement plan in mind is the priority. He has finished the book with recommended readings on the subject of Reconfigurement.
To be honest, this book is written for US citizens only, and I am not one of them. I should have kept it aside as soon as I realized it. The investment plans and policies are very US-specific. Two other facts about me are that I don't like non-fiction and anything to do with financial planning. Yet I could not put it down. Firstly, the writing style is fun. There are plenty of relevant jokes thrown in between boring definitions of financial plans. The book is very well-edited. The language sounds lively when read out loud. If you pick up this book, do read a few pages aloud. It would be fun. Secondly, there are takeaways from the book even if you live outside the US. The policies and laws may not be the same, but they are similar. So, you will get a basic idea of how to reconfigure your life, along with a lot of jokes to shine in your social circle.
I would like to rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. There was not a single thing that I did not like about it.
I would like to recommend it to anyone who earns money. You can read it together with your partner because a lot of the stuff in this book applies to couples. If you have just started working and are overwhelmed with the by-product, i.e., money, this book can tell you how to deal with it. If you are nearing retirement age, remember that it is never too late to learn. If you are somewhere in between, read it, find out what you are doing right, and improve on the other things.
