Niching Up by Chris Dreyer is a must-read for anyone who is thinking about niching or for a specialist who might be second-guessing the decision to niche. The latter describes me. Reading Niching Up has affirmed my decision to remain an expert in my niche and even has me excited about further narrowing my target audience.

The author is very credible, intelligent, and relatable. He provides a good summary of the pros and cons of niching and demonstrates that when you are passionate about your business, the cons may not really be cons for you. I especially appreciate how he explains that you can't simply call yourself an expert to be successful in a niche market. You must actually do the work necessary to get to expertise. This is critical to being a successful niche specialist.

Chris's discussion of referral business is spot-on. I share his philosophy that the best way to get a referral is to give a referral. Niching allows you to generate more referrals because you aren't all things to all people. He outlines the three sources of referrals: customers, complementary businesses, and competitors. He goes on to explain that a referral-based business is about relationship. Chris uses the term "relationship equity" to illustrate how you must first give before you can expect to receive. Building trust and providing value are keys to referral relationships. So many people don't get this, and instead show up and throw up. Chris refers to this as being a "soul-sucking snake oil salesman", which made me laugh out loud. We all know this type, and there's always at least one at every event.

I give Niching Up a 5 out of 5-star rating as it is well written, well edited, easy to read, and the author gives proper credit to other sources. Be it a blessing or a curse, I am one who notices typos, misuse of words, and improper punctuation. I noticed none of these in this concise, interesting, and enjoyable resource for getting to your niche and being successful there.
