Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is a memoir, offering a fascinating look into the author's life. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah was born in Aïn Beïda, a small town in the province of Constantine in northeastern Algeria, during the time of Algeria's French annexation. Initially studying in France at a medical school, he ultimately decided to fight for peace as an activist and co-founded the Association of North African Muslim Students. He also actively participated in the Algerian Revolution, with his goal being the overthrow of Algeria's French colonial government. Following this, he aspired to free more African nations from the control of other foreign countries. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah completed his medical studies in the United States of America, earning his doctorate. He later became the first scientist to develop a theory for "reverse transcriptase enzymes" through his abilities and application of knowledge. Additionally, he served as a Special Advisor to President Houphouët-Boigny. These accomplishments represent only a few of the many achievements he made throughout his life.
Dr. Ghoulem Berrah accomplished a great deal throughout his life, impressively balancing his quest for peace with maintaining academic excellence. He served in a medical capacity for the Moroccan Ministry of Health. Later, while studying at Indiana University, he researched the process of inhibition in DNA synthesis. Subsequently, he became a professor at the Yale School of Medicine after earning his Ph.D. in Microbiology from Indiana University in 1963. In 1966, he was elected to the New York Academy of Sciences. These achievements were made possible by his dedication to medical studies. Furthermore, it would be remiss not to mention the crucial role he played as a peace ambassador in resolving the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
A Dream For Peace is an inspirational and motivating biography that offers an in-depth account of the author's life. I was particularly moved by his love for his country and his willingness, even as a medical student, to employ force to free his people from the colonialist rule. Many individuals give up on leading fulfilling lives and pursuing successful careers because they prioritize fighting for their country. I appreciate how the author demonstrates that it is possible to combine the best of both worlds.
There is nothing in the book that displeases me. I adore the author's diplomatic and skillful writing. The organization of the book is commendable, and it has clearly been professionally edited and properly dated. Despite its length—over 600 pages—everything is well-organized and detailed. The inclusion of numerous photos depicting the events adds to the book's authenticity and believability. I admire the author's genuine tenacity, resolve, bravery, and dedication to duty. He consistently displays a strong opposition to racism and discrimination, even from a young age. I am compelled to give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars due to the author's fascinating life.
For readers who enjoy memoirs and biographies, I highly recommend this book. Anyone interested in learning more about the history of Africa following decolonization should read it. I do not recommend this book to those who prefer shorter reads, as despite being educational and inspiring, it requires time and patience to fully appreciate due to its length.
