Purpose by Gina Bianchini is a self-help genre book that provides the reader with encouragement and guidance on seeking your own purpose and building a community that incorporates your ideal future. While most self-help genre books focus on looking within yourself, Purpose takes it a step further by giving the reader practical advice and step-by-step guidelines for starting and building a community-focused purpose-filled life. The author discusses the current social media communities and the impact the algorithms have had on the communities found within. The author discusses her point of view surrounding social media, specifically her involvement with her own attempt at a social network. Personally, as someone who joined Facebook during the pandemic in 2020 (to maintain contact with loved ones) and who has not gotten back on since 2022, I did not find this part of the book relatable to finding my purpose and building a solid community.
Part II of the book was my favorite as the author gets to the meat of starting a community. The author encourages hosting. The author clarifies that she is talking about hosting digitally but claims the “skills are universal”. The author provides an impressive list of questions that can foster connections between people and groups of people and briefly touches on how to manage people who are negatively impacting the community you are building. The author focuses on finding and building relationships with those who align with your envisioned future.
Part III is where the author describes how to begin to host in the digital space and includes real-life examples. The stories varied and undoubtedly the reader could relate to at least one aspect of these stories. Overall, the author provides a rationale for why other social media sites are not or will not be a good fit, but why hers will be. It had a strong vibe of being a sales pitch which is my reason for rating it 4 out of 5 stars.
Overall, this is an enjoyable book to begin the journey of asking yourself deep questions and begin the process of finding like-minded people to share in that journey. The author has broken down how the first step looks and feels by using a step-by-step formula and including real-life examples of how it was successful.
