Chris Dreyer has written an excellent manual for the novice business owner trying to determine if narrowing their speciality field by niching is an appropriate decision. He lays out the arguments for considering a narrower niche clearly, and guides readers step by step through his own business journey learning the lessons he's trying to teach others. He presents arguments for and against niching so that the reader can take both sides into account and think on the best decision for their individual business. The decision to niche down can seem counter-intuitive to the novice business owner which Mr. Dreyer recognizes and takes into account. Reducing your number of customers to only one specialized group doesn't seem to make much sense, in fact the impulse is to help everyone and anyone just to keep the business going. Mr. Dreyer's point that the decision to niche should take place a couple years in was accurate in that regard. The author shared quite a bit from his own business story which made the story engaging and made the tone of the book more relaxed and casual which was appreciated. Thinking about the marketability of the book, I rated it as 4 out of 5 as I thought the author's frequent use of societal references in the book might make the book harder to relate to for those who do not share his film, restaurant and popular culture interests. A reader from a country not familiar with popular culture references from the United States might find this aspect of the book a bit tiresome as film references and allusions to American culture were frequently used in the book. However each example was explained clearly so if the example was not necessarily relatable, the reason for inclusion into the book was very clear. Overall, Mr. Dreyer's book was well laid out, full of relevant and accurate information that is helpful to business owners. I would recommend it to my peers in the business world.
