William Murphy really hit a home run with Thriving in the Storm. Using a sports metaphor is fitting as he is a self-proclaimed sports fan and uses many comparisons with sports throughout this book.

Having utilized many self-help books in this journey called life, I have found Thriving in the Storm to be an exceptional read that I will be returning to again and again. William Murphy does an outstanding job coaching us on how to overcome life’s obstacles, roadblocks, and adversities in clear and concise step-by-step suggestions that can be adjusted to fit individual needs/goals.

He begins by retelling the horrific details of the physical, verbal, and emotional abuse he suffered at the hands of his father and how the abuse shaped his mental well-being and thought processes for decades to come, but you do not need to be a survivor of abuse to benefit from this book. It would be beneficial for anybody wanting to improve their life in various aspects. He continues on to explain how he found his niche in the mortgage industry and how his passion for marathons manifested. Interspersed in and around these stories is the true heart of the message: the retraining of our mind, body, and spirit. The way this message is communicated to the reader in such simple steps, makes meeting your goals attainable. Don't get me wrong, it is specified throughout that this is in no way easy work. He does ask the hard questions that personal growth/self-help books are known for, but by setting the smaller mini-goals he suggests, it helps to soften the blows and can (hopefully) make the answers more manageable. He also makes it very clear that the tools and concepts that have worked for him may not work for you, but he advises on how you can adapt them to work for your unique situation.

He really stresses about cultivating a positive outlook and even goes into the science behind a positive vs negative mindset. I believe his process of retraining your mind to be more positive is very straight-forward and effortless. And again, very simple step-by-step instructions on how to do the work to implement this. There are also small exercises sprinkled throughout the book to keep you on point and moving to the next goal and/or mini-goal, depending on where you are in your journey. I believe the idea of taking it one small step at a time or focusing on the next mini-goal, the way William Murphy suggests, is a very sustainable way of achieving your main goal.

He included a chapter on finding outside help in the form of a life coach and/or therapist, and while he was very thorough and informative, I did find myself starting to wander a bit. I do fully support this aspect of any personal journey and I do agree with him, but felt he did get a bit long-winded in this area. Even so, I would still rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars.

All-in-all this is an excellent book to reach for if you wish to be Thriving in the Storm because unfortunately, we all know that storms are unavoidable, and sooner or later we’ll find ourselves in the midst of one. I feel much more prepared for the storms with this book in my toolbox.
