Review of Niching Up
Chris Dreyer’s life is a story of success with plenty of emotion and adrenaline caused by his obsession to focus that led him from opening several tens of websites and helping double-chined people to deal with personal injury law firms, from basketball to SEO and specializing in a niche. The enthusiasm of his narrative is contagious and makes reading easy and pleasurable.
When thinking about Niching up or focusing on a specific market or industry, we also have to consider the pros and cons we will face up. I will mention only a few because this is not about rewriting the book but reviewing it. Considering first the downsides, we encounter the drawback of targeting a smaller market, which signifies that we will have a limited potential customer base; but if that market still offers demand we can reckon that is a viable option. The risk of changes in an industry is another con, so as trends and technology evolve, we will need to adapt quickly to avert being outdated and remain relevant. Although a narrowing focus may mean missing out on opportunities in other areas, we surely discover positive points by specializing in a niche. Less may mean more; it depends on us.
Specializing in a niche also has a number of upsides. In the first place, it allows us to develop a profound understanding of the needs of our target market and its preferences. Being aware of this enables us to provide more personalized solutions that will result in robust, reciprocal trust. Niching up also enables us to become experts in the field of consulting. We can focus on improving specific skills and knowledge that will directly benefit our clients. With their satisfaction and our excellent background, we can think of higher prices for our specialized services. We will also become more likely to be referred to other customers and be able to build strong relationships within our niche. With experience, we can learn how to reduce waste, eliminate unnecessary expenses, and make our operations more efficient. Our expertise will speak for itself and get us more clients and referrals. Finally, networking will be easier based on connections with key players. I really think the advantages are compelling.
I enjoyed the reading among, other factors, because of the mixed grammar of the prose that moves easily from very academic inverse structures, more frequent in literary works, to very colloquial language phrases, keeping interest high at all moments, for I sometimes thought I was talking to him rather than reading him and also because he presents what worked for him as a tool for everybody else to find their path to success via specialized selection of a niche, of course after having accrued experience. I give this book five out of five stars.
