This book is inspirational and life-affirming. The easy-going first person narrative is direct, easy to read and engaging. From the introduction, where the author talks about himself and describes how through self determination, he has been able to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, to his step-by-step guide on how to thrive in adversity, I was hooked.

Bill Murphy's book is not your typical self-help or personal development guide. By using personal anecdotes and examples, as well as a simple writing style, Murphy is able to convey his message without sounding patronising or self-congratulatory, by remaining relatable. There is no flowery language or indecipherable text. All of his stories are told with an honesty and openness that are refreshing and this is what makes the book so easy to read and to follow.

The nine principles that Murphy provides are underpinned with some great exercises, which act as a 'call to action' to kick start anyone's journey on the road to success, regardless of their background, history or current situation in life. Murphy repeatedly reminds us that he was nothing special and achieved success in all areas of his life, therefore you can too.

Murphy's story and journey is truly remarkable and this book conveys it all beautifully. As a self-help and personal development guide, it works. Murphy's ability to use his life story and adversity to help others is clearly evident in this book and for that reason, I believe everyone should read it. This book gets a 5/5 from me.
