Review of Niching Up
Chris Dyer’s Niching Up is a great book to help you better understand why you should find a niche in your industry and what that truly means and entails for you and/or your company.
I appreciate that this book takes the reader through both the pros and cons of niching because it is common for other resources to only discuss the positives of doing so, without taking into consideration their audience and the importance of having all the information possible when making such an important decision. This book reads like someone is speaking to you in conversation which I appreciate - it is an “easy” read and Dyer does not use convoluted explanations, making things difficult to follow. He has outlined the what and why’s throughout the chapters and answered all of my questions as they came up which I was very pleased with. Having a personal interest in learning more about this topic, this book was very helpful in answering my questions about how to determine if niching is the right call for me and what exactly I would need to provide or focus on if I choose to do so.
As a reader, I believe it is important to capture attention in different ways and try to help the audience understand the point that is being made in simple and easy-to-follow ways. Dyer is successful in doing so through his multiple references to pop culture - through classic movies, famous actors, sports, world-renowned athletes, popular online games, and more. These references and metaphors make it simple to understand the ideas of niching and why certain decisions can be beneficial or detrimental to a company. It makes the content of this book consumable to a greater audience which I appreciate as a reader. It is also beneficial to have references and quotes from different sources throughout. Not only did this help me feel more confident in what I was reading, but it also provided me with additional resources to do further research into the topic of niching and determining how it could or would benefit me. It takes away from me having to go out and find these resources myself - books, websites, podcasts.
If you are looking for a book about niching and why it may benefit you (or may not depending on your industry and interests) I recommend this book, which is why I rate it a 4 out of 5 stars.
