Review of Niching Up
When I saw the title of Chris Dreyer's book, Niching Up , my first impression was "Ohh no, not one of those again!". Although I was still rather sceptical after reading the book description and the author bio, I told myself I would not have much to lose by reading the book itself.
The thing is, there are tons of books on digital marketing on the market and most of them promise heaven on earth or overnight success. So, sometimes it's difficult to separate the chaff from the grain. What separates Chris Dreyer's book from most of them?
For starters, Dryer acknowledges early in the book the importance of hard work and focus as one endeavours to carve out a niche in one's chosen field. In the first chapter, he outlines the drawbacks associated with niching and in a clear and logical manner, explains how the challenges can actually be turned into strengths.
In the next seven chapters, Dreyer presents the benefits of niching in a sequential mode, thereby illustrating how the benefits have knock-on and loop effects. His conceptualization conjures the image of a pyramid, wherein he encourages the reader to start at the broad base, exploring the possibilities of one's industry and narrowing up as one rises to the apex. He examines the benefits of first looking at the bigger picture, such as being able to (a) identify the differences of the various subsets of options within one's industry; (b) identify one's passion and strengths; (c) acquire experience in order to build awareness and (d) accumulate data so as to be able to make informed decisions. By dedicating each chapter to one benefit, the author shows great mastery of his subject and amazing depth of analysis.
In his exposition, Dreyer uses examples the reader can relate to, including anecdotes from his wealth of personal experience, stories about sports heroes and movie characters as well as quotes from eminent personalities. Considering how orderly his ideas are arranged, it is easy to see how he draws on his background as a teacher. His humorous tone also makes the book engaging and without giving anything away, I can safely add that there are even a couple of laughing-out-loud moments in the book.
In the Conclusion chapter, Dreyer summarizes the advantages and the disadvantages of niching, demonstrating the knack of not only looking at both sides of the coin, but on the edge as well.
Although I tried very hard, I could not find anything not to like about Niching Up . Now that I have read the book, it is easier for me to understand why Chris Dreyer is an expert in his field and why his other books have been well received.
Rating: 5 out of 5.
