Review of YOU CAN TALK TO ANYONE:
You Can Talk to Anyone: Easily Engage in Conversation Using Proven Communication Skills and Forge Strong Interpersonal Connection by Ellen Dawson is a self-help book about social connection through conversation. This book gives a step-by-step guide on how to start a conversation and gradually make friends with deep connections. The author uses reliable sources to validate the importance of social connections by stating the negative impacts of social isolation. In addition, she highlights the benefits of building close friendships. The author's goal in this book is to help you move out of your comfort zone, initiate conversations with others, and transition from small talk to more meaningful conversations that can build lasting friendships.
This book begins with the author narrating her social isolation experience. Her experience sets the foundation for the second section of this book, which explores social isolation causes. In this second section, the author uses expert knowledge to explain how three factors: self-disconnect, increased social anxiety, and loneliness contribute to social isolation. The author then provides detailed information on these factors to help the reader identify the causes of their isolation. Subsequent sections offer a step-by-step guide on using proven communication techniques, seeking social connections, selecting conversation topics, maintaining conversational flow, and how to apply these tips to build meaningful and lasting friendships.
The author encourages readers to journal their experiences and create action plans to make the book's content more practical. The author incorporates real-life examples and actionable tips throughout the book. One saying that resonates within the book is: "Conversation is social currency; it is valuable."
I appreciate how the author made this book easy to read, with topics flowing seamlessly from one to the next. Including examples makes it easy for the reader to understand how to implement the given tips.
I did not find anything to dislike about this book. Therefore, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars because it provides practical suggestions on how and why we should make friends as adults. It also provides suggestions on how to initiate and sustain conversations. The book was also professionally edited with no errors noted.
I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with isolation and social disconnection. I also recommend it to introverts and individuals with poor conversation skills, as it offers manageable steps to improve their conversation and social skills.
