Stuck! by Josh Miller is a hard-to-come-by educational book packed with knowledge and guides for screenwriters, coaching them on how to become successful and vibrant storytellers. The book begins with Josh Miller expounding on the topic “Kernel of the Idea”, stating that ideas can come from a wide array of sources and identifying their origin can guide writers to achieve a clear and comprehensive narrative. Chapter by chapter, the book explores topics relating to the visual medium's power in conveying messages, the importance of the three-act dramatic structure, character development (with a special focus on the protagonist and antagonist), the use of dialogue and subtext, the significance of genre and conventions, and the effective use of props and other cinematic techniques like flashbacks and montages.

The book also emphasises the role of emotion in storytelling and how it resonates with the audience. Throughout the book, the author stresses the need for originality, creativity, and genuine emotion in crafting memorable and impactful stories. The writing style was engaging, and practical examples from well-known films helped illustrate the concepts discussed. The book serves as an inspiring and instructive resource for anyone interested in honing their screenwriting skills and creating engaging, authentic, and resonant narratives for the screen.

One aspect that I particularly appreciate about the book is its relatability, especially to someone like me who just concluded watching Avatar. Finding a connection between this book's content and such a popular movie enhanced the reading experience significantly. It's evident that Josh Miller possesses a profound understanding of the subject topic. The fact that the author is well-informed and knowledgeable about screenwriting and storytelling is reassuring. As a reader, having faith in the author's proficiency enhances the overall reading experience because I can trust the insight he provides.

I couldn't find anything to dislike about this book. Josh Miller’s writing style is clear and deliberate. The clarity in conveying ideas is crucial in any educational book because it ensures that readers comprehend the concepts being discussed without confusion.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because I found the information in it really helpful, and I couldn't find errors in it. In other words, the book was exceptionally well edited.

I recommend this book to several groups of people, such as aspiring screenwriters, film students and people who generally want to improve their writing skills. Stuck! by Josh Miller offers valuable knowledge and guidance that can be applied not only to screenwriting but also to various forms of storytelling in different mediums.

I am glad I read this book after I wrote the first draft of my screenplay. It has made the rewriting process feel a heck of a lot more fulfilling and less stressful. I am able to return to chapters of the book that are applicable to my script, and define which parts of my story can improve. Josh Miller does exactly what his book promises to do: “how to harness your unique voice, experience, and perspective, giving your screenplay real substance”. Miller delivers his screenwriting information in a concise and engaging manner with plenty of examples from contemporary and classic films. I love how short and sweet the chapters are. It makes the book feel less like an information overload and more like a quick guide for cinematic storytelling. Whether you are a beginner screen writer, or a seasoned professional, this is a very easy book to read. I have only written a handful of shorts, and have just finished the first draft of my first feature. This book has definitely been helping me through my journey. I was thrilled to hear that Josh is a fellow Canadian, and I hope one day I can talk movies with him, and get him to sign my book. Thank you, Josh!
