Review of Why Does Government Need to be Funded?
"Why Does Government Need to be Funded?" by Amphidromus is an insightful book. It's divided in seven captivating chapters spread across 161 pages (+ acknowledgements and covers, making it 171 pages). It's a short and dense enough to be throughout.
The author, Amphidromus (a pseudonym that is explained on the very first page after the cover and table of contents), raises a fundamental question that often goes unnoticed: Why does the government require funding?
They then proceed to answer the question by challenging reader to delve deeper into this query, encouraging us not to be content with the status quo and to perpetually seek answers beyond our current comprehension of systems and politics in general, down to the individual level.
The core paradigm of the book lies in the belief that any effective political-economic structure must serve justice and liberty while remaining financially sustainable. However, according to the author, such a system does not presently exist in our world. This critical perspective on the functioning of governments compels readers to ponder the complex interplay between fiscal responsibility and societal well-being.
Each chapter title fully encompasses the content within, which makes this book easy to reference and go back to. This deliberate approach gives readers a sense of anticipation as they progress through the text. Furthermore, Amphidromus adopts an engaging writing style, akin to a knowledgeable teacher imparting wisdom to eager students. This method effectively communicates unfamiliar concepts, bolstered by well-researched facts to support each argument.
Readers are exposed to a thorough examination of these ideas, enriched by the use of original Greek terms for precise definitions. However it has also its downsides as the terminology and precise lexicon may not be accessible to all. It can cause confusion in some readers and it would really benefit from a glossary. There are also a few moments in which the author diverges from the core idea, by talking about a near death experience for instance.
Despite these smaller drawbacks, "Why Does Government Need to be Funded?" remains an exceptionally well-edited book that asks the right questions and gives food for thought to all readers alike. Amphidromus put in a lot of effort which I believe paid off, the contents are lucid and realistic, as well as full of interesting insights.
The book's informative and intellectually stimulating content offers readers a fresh perspective on money, government funding, and how all of these elements are connected to one another through the general system in which we live.
Its comprehensive analysis is truly its highlights. I also didn't notice any errors. While some portions may challenge casual readers, the author's articulate and passionate presentation makes it a must-read for anyone interested in the different systems that make for government funding. Due to its American nature, it mostly relates to the US government more than any other, but I believe other systems can be studied and thought about through this book. So even non US readers could benefit from reading the book, not only because the US economy and government have worldwide effects, but also because the fundamentals of the systems can be relevant to any government.
For all of these reasons, I believe that this book deserves its 5 out of 5 rating. It's a useful, worthwhile book.
