Review of The Mitten Man
The Mitten Man is a memoir about a wife's life following her husband's traumatic brain injury (TBI). Rosemary Wright created this book primarily from emails she sent to friends and family about Bernie's condition while he was recovering. You could tell she was friendly with her loved ones right away, and that tone was maintained throughout the story as we read more of those entries. The emails were very organized—some even had bullet points—because it made it easy to share her thoughts. These messages showed her desire for her husband to recover and frequently concluded with words of gratitude to express how much her close ones’ support meant to her.
Bernie could not do simple things like button his shirt when he first started recovering, but he quickly relearned to eat and walk around, and he had a sharp tongue. He would crack expensive jokes and even flirt with women while his wife was sitting right there. To make matters worse, he was always trying to outwit people or do something nefarious, like escape from the hospital. His caregivers put mittens on him to prevent this from happening again, and he earned the nickname "Mitten Man" as a result.
Despite the fact that Bernie was in a bad situation, he always made those around him smile, and the author admitted that seeing him innocent and happy was what kept her going. His mood swings, occasional memory loss, and mischief never caused her to regret or dislike him. She openly declared near the end that she was born to be Bernie's caregiver. Rosemary always put him first, even when she had her own challenges. I like this aspect of the book best because it speaks of selflessness and the power of family.
Regardless of the subject matter, this book was fantastic and radiated joy, innocence, and affection. The only criticism I have for this book is the editing; it appeared sloppy, and errors were frequent. This aspect deprives the book of its perfect rating, earning it a 4 out of 5. This book would be appealing to those who want a story about strength and hope or who simply want to see the life of a TBI survivor's wife.
