Review of HEROic Leadership
HEROic Leadership by Dr. Melonie Boone is a book for team leaders and virtually everyone who works with a team. Becoming a HEROic leader is the secret to creating a more emotionally healthy and productive workplace. The acronym HERO stands for "hope, efficacy (self-efficacy), resilience, and optimism." Team leaders ought to be HEROic and simultaneously understand which of the elements their team members possess. This will help such leaders create a better workplace and better team relationships.
The book started with the author's personal stories, which was a great way to begin. It gave a clear insight into what the author wanted to discuss in the book and helped break the word HEROic down to a layperson's level. That was an excellent job on the author's part. The author also continued to tell stories almost in every chapter of the book.
The author includes assessments in the book, which make the book practical. Chapters 3 to 7 contain assessments geared towards discovering where a leader falls on each element in the term HEROic. Also, in the book's appendices, there are further assessments. This is a very big one from the author, as it shows the intentionality of wanting leaders to discover themselves and their teams.
The author went into a detailed explanation of concepts. She would define the concept and talk about research and findings done on the concept. The author did such for all the elements in the acronym HERO.
The book is filled with references from several authors. This shows the level of research that went into writing the book. On the flip side, it can make the book appear to be academic writing. However, it's a good idea, as it will broaden the book's readership to leaders in different spheres, including academia.
The book is exceptionally edited. There are no grammatical errors. I rate it five out of five stars because there's nothing to dislike. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their leadership in the context of teamwork.
