The battles waged against mental illness, particularly Bipolar Disorder, are often fought behind closed doors because of the hushed tones and glancing eyes that accompany that talk in public. The stigma associated with these now-common phenomena is immense and difficult to comprehend. In his book STIGMA Through the Eyes of a Bipolar Artist, David A. Feingold seeks to create awareness about Bipolar Disorder, narrate his experiences, and dismiss myths around it.

David Feingold has led what I would describe as a hard life. From losing his mother at a very young age to suicide to fighting mental illness. He takes us through his experience as a patient with Bipolar Disorder. He talks about the diagnosis, the symptoms, and the stigma he faced throughout his journey. David talks quite candidly about how the disease affected his life. His performances and relationships took a hit from the impairment that this condition inflicted. He explains the concept of self-impairment quite expertly and gives us guidelines on how to deal with it. He talks to the patients, doctors, caregivers, and the general public about the appropriate ways to deal with this self-impairment in Bipolar Disorder patients. He accompanies his writing with the inspiration of how he used art to help him sail through those difficult moments. He also includes those magnificent pieces of art.

The author's expertise and knowledge on the subject matter is incredible. This prowess and his excellent artistry made for a perfect reading experience. I learned so much about Bipolar Disorder and its effects. Most of the information out there about the condition can be misleading, and David made it his job to lay out the facts. I applaud his bravery in sharing his vulnerability and story with us. It added so much emotion and authenticity to the book. His passion and desire to help others who may be in the same situation as him is unquestionable.

I'm not an enormous art enthusiast, but the ones in this book were extraordinary. While some were deep, the author's descriptions and interpretations made them much easier and fun to comprehend. His creativity is for sure top-notch. The language in the book was also simple and very easy to understand. He broke down the concept of Bipolar impaired self so expertly using this accessible language. I came up with nothing but praise for this masterpiece and had no shortcomings to report.

Consequently, I am glad and proud to award the book a perfect rating of five out of five stars. It is insightful, intimate, and enlightening. It is also well-written and professionally edited. I recommend it not just to those directly affected by Bipolar Disorder but also anyone interested in understanding mental illness, stigma, and its effects.

It is indeed praise-worthy that Mr. Feingold would tell his story. Patients with bipolar disorder rarely want to discuss it and that is understandable. But it also keeps the rest of us, those without bipolar, from truly understanding it.

I feel real bad that he has to go through all that he went through, I really wish he didn't. I would actually like to read the book as I want to know more about his experience.
