Review of Reconfigurement
4 out of 5 on my scale of good books!
Whilst this book fits well into the Retirement Planning category, I would recommend it to a wider audience as a self-help guide.
It is written by Alan Fleischauer, who has a great deal of experience of working for over twenty years in the financial sector and who is committed to life-long learning.
“Reconfigurement” - in the author’s own words - is possible at any age and can become a turning point on the way for preparation for retirement. Whilst our life expectancy tends to get longer, our lives are also getting more expensive, more complicated. Often we have to plan not only for ourselves, but we also have to include elderly parents or children, our partners/spouses. So planning ahead is crucial indeed.
I liked that the book is written in a way that makes complex things look simpler, it provides hypothetical examples that one can compare to their own circumstances and think what they might face in the future and what they would need to reconfigure in their life in order to deal with it in the best possible way.
The book takes into account a wide range of circumstances, not only insurance and financial specifics as such. Choice of hobby, choice of lifestyle, consideration of your elderly parents, health assessment, research of possible further education, change of profession, acquiring a new set of skills, - all of which seem to be secondary issues, but, as it turns out, are rather primary factors in the planning process, as they dictate what financial level one needs to sustain in order to be able to enjoy life as they expect.
The book does cover a lot of amalgamated topics, and yields with a pathway rather than a “one fits all” solution. It equips a reader with a thought-provoking set of questions and a number of ways to approach personal circumstances, areas to consider and educate yourself in, if one is going to try out reconfigurement in practice.
One downfall of the book is that it is aimed at American citizens. I would love a variation of this edition with some European examples.
I would also note that this book could be a great tool for the younger generation too, for those who are only starting their financial independence. It can give them a great perspective as to what they might need to consider in the future, not necessarily just for retirement purposes.
