Review of 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir
28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir by Poppy Mortimer is exactly what the title implies. It is a humorous non-fictional book about 28 of the most awful dates that the author has been on. The author is a self-made entrepreneur who is in her 40s, and she happens to still be single. She also has a degree in creative writing. She decided to put her writing skills to good use and, in great detail, describe some of the most disastrous dates she has been on. According to this book she dated several different kinds of men, and all of which at the end of every chapter did not end in their favor. Using her personal experience over the past 20 years, she decided to write this book to remind all single women that they are not alone in their struggle with finding a good guy for them.
One of my favorite parts about the book was that the author never referred to her dates as being failures, instead she saw the good aspects in each of the dates and focused the book on those. She also included key takeaways at the end of each chapter on what she learned about herself and what she is looking for in a man. The author has exceptional writing skills as well as a strong sense of humor, which she was able to bring forth within her memoir. I also admire her ability to talk about her own life experience, but have the ability to write the book in a way that was encouraging to other single women and not embarrassing to herself.
Personally, there was nothing that I did not like about the book. However, the book included several instances of profanities, which may be uncomfortable for some readers. I also like that she gave a brief “warning” before each chapter to let the reader know if anything may make them uncomfortable in the next chapter.
I rate this book five out of five stars for all the reasons I stated above. The book is exceptionally well edited, and I found no errors or typos. I really enjoyed the sarcastic nature of the author, and the way she explained the events of each of the 28 disastrous dates.
I recommend this book to adult readers who are single or even in a relationship and readers who love nonfiction mixed with humor. This book is not suitable for a young audience since there is the use of profanity and mild descriptions of sexual content.
