Review of When Business Is Love
When Business is love is a memoir of Jan Ryde, a fifth generation CEO of Hastens - world class Swedish producer of premium mattresses. In his book, Jan has recounted his life experiences and struggles, fighting against odds and family politics, and making Hastens a world-renowned brand with beliefs, confidence and above all - Love. It touches upon the hardships his ancestors faced in order keep Hastens standing and showed how the resilience of his elders paid off and became a lovable brand. The book starts with Jan’s great, great grandfather’s philosophy - “To learn and master a profession of your choosing that will let you give people something they need. And by doing so, you will always be able to look after the ones you love.” And continues with Jan’s philosophy of “If you want to be successful in business, you must be a creator. The key is being.”
The book is a practical guide on how to successfully conduct business as well as a journey down a spiritual path, influencing and being influenced by people. A conscious effort that takes the reader on a journey of self-assessment and self actualization and converts readers into thinkers. The philosophies scattered throughout the book are guided principles, able to create not only masterpieces but masterminds. In fact, the underlying moral of the book is that anything is achievable if people are motivated, and people are motivated only by love. Going further, the author, while jogging down his memory lane, demonstrates how any obstacle is achievable by love and focusing on the positive aspects of life rather than immobilizing yourself by living in the past, unable to break the status quos and established rules, and inflicting oneself with personal demons.
The beauty of this memoir is that it is not subjective to just Hastens’ story but also applicable on any business, be it large or small. It is also not just applicable to corporate world and its environment, but also insightful to anyone looking for self development and finding meaning in life. This work of art will inspire its reader to live an authentic life and celebrate selfness, as only then, the author proclaims that a person is able to achieve what they are striving for.
I personally loved this book. As an introvert I also shy away from my dreams and think of all possible mishaps likely to happen upon starting something new; but reading the book has stirred the philosopher in me and I would recommend this book to anyone who is making ends meet to find themselves in this fake and competitive world. This reading would really make you a carefree person, shushing away your adversaries with a smile and confidence to rule the world in your own way. The book gets 5 out of 5 stars from me as language was simple, and flow of ideas was fluid and engaging, and It was well edited.
