Breaking the Veil of Silence
By Jobst Bittner
Published by TOS Publishing, 2013
ISBN: 978-3-9812441-8-2
This book is a beautiful picture of repentance, reconciliation, and renewal. The author uses the backdrop of the Holocaust perpetrated by Nazi Germany on the world in general and Jews in particular to demonstrate how, in spite of the cruelty of man, God’s love can shine forth and break through the darkness brought about by the “veil of silence”. As the author so clearly delineates everyone whether directly involved or indirectly is a victim of this human tragedy. Those who were victimized by the Nazi regime carry the hurt and pain of this suffering. Those who were perpetrators (even by their silence) carry the shame and guilt. Both need healing, even to the third and fourth generation, that only the love of God, through Jesus’ atoning work, can bring.
Although this is a “German and Jewish” story it could be told of countless other tragedies around the world. There have been other atrocities and acts of brutality which need God’s redeeming grace. Much, maybe all, of the world is suffering under this duress. What the author has written and his hope is applicable everywhere, whether in Germany with the Jews, in the United States with slavery, in Africa with racial “cleansing”, or anywhere else where man’s baser nature has carried the day.
As author’s press release states, “The Veil of Silence concerns you more than you think. You come across it at every turn, whether in your personal life, in your family, in your church or congregation, or in your cities and nations. The Veil of Silence is the reason for inner coldness, loneliness, and the sense of being lost in darkness. Once you break it, you will be able to receive the immeasurable blessing of God and the authority to change your surroundings with His love. Every nation carries its own burden of guilt and trauma that is passed down through the generations, while a Veil of Silence prevents reconciliation, healing, and restoration.
The press statement sums up the book saying, “Through a captivating blend of history, theology, and psychology, Jobst Bittner provides a brave, discerning perspective on this Veil of Silence and proves that the weight of history can be lifted. It is a powerful and practical intervention and spiritual guide to reclaim our authority by uprooting all destructive tendencies of covering up the past, uncovering our own family history, rediscovering the Jewish roots of our faith, and moving forward into action. Once the veil is lifted, true healing, restoration, and change can begin.”
This is the story of healing, may it be multiplied time and time again across geographic and cultural boundaries. I join my heart with that of the author in prayer that God will use this book and its story to help usher His healing into the hearts of all mankind.
