A thought provoking book. It is quite obvious that the author, J.R.Rising, is not a great fan of his government. His exploration of the spiralling debt in the USA leads to several conclusions. The major theme throughout the book is one of government ineptitude coupled with a very strong suggestion of corrupt collusion between lobbyists, bankers and the government itself.
As a UK citizen it was really interesting to read a critique of a system of government that is very similar to ours. Both systems are based on capitalism and there seems to be the same criticisms levelled at the American system that could be levelled at the UK political system. The USA fundamentally has a two party system and increasingly in the UK there is a parallel with the two major political parties being Conservative and Labour. This two party system in Westminster has seen a shift towards independence in Scotland with the growth of the SNP and rejection of the two major political parties. The author is strongly of the opinion that both the Republican Party and the Democratic Party are equally as bad and equally to blame for the financial crisis.
The author provides a step by step approach to writing the book and wherever possible he tries to substantiate his arguments with factual references. Throughout the book J.R.Rising takes great pains to stress that he is not a politician or a professional political journalist but just a very concerned individual who felt compelled enough to write a critique but also to suggest possible solutions .It would have been easy for him to have written a complete critique but he has also tried to come up with positive suggestions to make the entire governmental system fairer and work for the ordinary American citizen.
Some of his suggestions are really off the wall. The one recommendation reminded me of the television programme in the UK, You're Fired! I cannot see that particular proposal making much headroom in sweeping away the fundamental changes that the author cries out for.
However, his recommendation in relation to part of the debt is pure magic. It would be a massive kick in the teeth to the system .
The title of the book incorporates the phrase, “political revolution”. I cannot give away any spoilers but his suggestions in relation to political parties and law making are quite radical.
There were aspects of the book that irritated me when reading it.The continued use of the same phrases became annoying. The same criticisms were repeated over and over again. However that was just a personal thing and may not bother other readers. They did not detract too much from the overall well written book.
The author is at pains to stress the non political nature of his beliefs and equally attacks both major political parties however he strongly believes in capitalism and is quite forceful in his rejection of socialism and redistribution of wealth. In my book this makes him a right winger.
Although we have opposing political views and probably come at the problems from differing standpoints I still think that this book should be an essential read not only for politicians in America but for politicians all over the world . I would imagine that it would be an uncomfortable read for some major political figures but only if they possess a conscience .That is something that the author suggests is lacking from the majority of politicians and bankers. I believe that the author would add lobbyists to this list as well.
Any concerned citizen should also get hold of this book. After all it affects everyone. You cannot moan about something unless you're prepared to stand up and do something about it.
I thoroughly recommend this book and would rate it five out of five stars.
