Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream is an enlightening memoir by Dr. Frank L. Douglas, recounting his remarkable journey from a humble beginning in British Guiana to his pursuit of higher education in the United States. Upon receiving a scholarship, Douglas set foot in the U.S. in 1963 to study at Lehigh University and Cornell University Medical School. His initial encounters with a new culture, coupled with profound racial discrimination, deeply impacted him. Throughout his career, Douglas grapples with these challenges, eventually establishing himself as a prominent figure in medical research and academia.

One interesting feature of the book is its unwavering examination of racial discrimination within the realms of educational institutions and corporate environments. Dr. Douglas encountered numerous instances of bias, including the unjust denial of a promotion solely because he is African. The memoir delves deeply into his diligent research on this matter, shedding light on the unsettling prevalence of discrimination in American society.

I like many aspects of this book. This book possesses a compelling and pervasive theme of resilience and hope when confronted with daunting obstacles. The author's writing style stands out for its candid and forthright nature, eschewing any inclination to skirt around critical issues. This openness instills a sense of trust in the book's content and the author's perspective. His direct approach effectively trims away superfluous details, enabling readers to distinctly discern his positions on a range of subjects. The author's background gave depth to the storyline.

I don't dislike anything about this book. One thing that might appear as an issue is the abundance of technical descriptions, primarily, which might pose a challenge for readers unfamiliar with certain scientific terminologies. However, as a science student, this issue didn't inhibit my reading experience. This book delivers a powerful message against racial discrimination. I didn't notice any errors while reading this book, which shows that it was exceptionally well-edited.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for the reasons I listed above. I recommend this book to readers passionate about eradicating racial discrimination.
