Review of Purpose
In Purpose, Gina Bianchini takes us on a journey of discovery to find our purpose in life and teaches us how to combine our time, talent, energy, and focus to make our purpose more impactful on the wider society. From ‘Finding Your Purpose’, 'Turn Your Purpose into Action', to ‘Take Your Purpose Digital’, Bianchini guides us through the process of turning our purpose into action by capitalizing on the compounding force of communities that are powered by modern technology. The blueprint for finding one's purpose and achieving the 'Bigger Purpose' is clearly outlined in what the author calls the 'Purpose 30' document among others.
Several features combine to make this book particularly impactful.
1. Gina Bianchini’s expertise in this subject is demonstrated throughout the book. As the creator of Community Design, an established strategy framework for understanding and growing online and real-world communities, she writes from a position of authority as she patiently shows us how to navigate what she calls ‘the action trap of modern life’ and other pitfalls that are there to distract us on our purpose journey.
2. Admirably, Bianchini's authority on the subject is tempered with her humility and the honest down-to-earth manner in which she writes. For example, in Chapter 10 she states, “This is my first time writing a book, but it’s not my first time teaching people how to bring their purpose to life in a community – IRL or digitally.” This statement establishes the high level of ethos she demonstrates throughout this book.
3. In a friendly conversational tone, Bianchini uses case studies and real-life stories to illustrate her ideas, effectively demonstrating that what she is teaching us is practicable and not merely theoretical. She reminds us time and time again that the principles that she is teaching us have been applied successfully by her at Mighty Networks.
4. The book is well-organized with appropriately worded chapter titles and subtitles. It is divided into three main parts and a ‘Chapter Interlude’ summarizing the key ideas shared in Parts I and II is placed at the end of Part II. Also, at the end of each chapter, the author provides a synopsis of what will be discussed in the next chapter. Sections of the book labeled 'Notes and Citations', and 'About the Author' are just some of the other interesting features that help to make this book easy to read and understand as well as maintain reader engagement.
5. The author uses several unique terms throughout the book and includes a glossary of these to make it very convenient for readers to quickly re-engage with these terms.
6. Questioning is another strategy used by the author to engage the reader throughout the book. These questions force readers to think about the possible answers.
This brilliantly crafted book is intended for anyone, children and adults, searching for their purpose in life believing that they have something unique to offer to the rest of the world.
Purpose is on track to connect with anyone on a quest to discover their purpose in life, and once they have found it, to scale that purpose to new heights by using modern technology to build vibrant communities.
I rate the book five out of five stars.
