The book YouTube: TheREALYouTubeStory is a very interesting non-fiction read. The author, Eric Skaggs, claims that he is the real founder of the popular video-sharing website known as YouTube. His book tells the short story of how he gave Chad Hurley the idea to start YouTube while they were in University, with the promise that Chad would give him 1% of the company when he became rich.

Most of us know the story that Chad Hurley gave to the press when questioned about how he came up with the idea for YouTube. Chad tells of how he and a few friends were taking videos on their camcorders at a party but wanted a way to share them with eachother, thus, YouTube was born. Eric Skaggs tells a different story with a promise of $1,000,000 to whomever can help him win his case against Chad Hurley.

This book seems more like a plea to help a losing cause. While I realize the author is attempting to get the money owed to him, this “book” seems like a last ditch effort. This book is only 40 pages including the introduction and contents page. It is barely the length of an essay. As an avid reader, I would not purchase this book because it is so short and not worth the money the author would want for it.

Not only was the book short, it also had a lot of repetition. Eric describes in depth, how he told Chad the way to make YouTube happen and how to find investors. On the same page, he describes this again in short form when realizing that Chad actually took his advice. This happens a few more times and if these repetitions were taken out, I’m sure the author could have cut out 2-4 more pages.

While it was an interesting read, it is hard to find credibility with the author as this book seems like a way to only discredit the founder of YouTube. The author talks of how he is owed money, but also how he wants to work with Chad Hurley. The reader is left wondering if the author has a grudge or an infatuation. I give this book a 2 out of 4 star rating for creativity, but lack of evidence to back up the story. It would be a good read for those who are really involved with YouTube. I honestly do not think the general public would be very interested in this story.

I've heard about this before, but never the whole story. And I doubt anyone will really find out the true story.
