Sex, Love & Cops by Wendy Wilkins is a memoir recounting her romantic experiences and the events of her earlier years as a police officer. Commencing with her enrollment in the Mt. Waverley police academy, the author shared captivating anecdotes that encapsulate her life's journey. Throughout her narrative, the author candidly discusses both favorable and unfavorable occurrences during her early twenties as a police officer, imparting the wisdom she gained, her apprehensions, and the deliberate choices she made to embrace life while embarking on worldly adventures. As a young officer, the author did not neglect her love life; she formed a deep connection with Charlie, enjoyed dates, embarked on journeys, and excelled in her role as a police officer. I enjoyed some aspects of the book. I admired the author's adept handling of both her personal life and her professional career. Despite her demanding role in the police force, the author skillfully balanced her job and relationship. Many individuals struggle to maintain this balance, often prioritizing one over the other. The book also imparted a valuable lesson on the significance of embracing diversity. Through her travels to various locations such as Melbourne, London, New York, and Los Angeles, the author had the opportunity to engage with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Some aspects of the book did not resonate with me. The author frequently revisits past events that have no direct connection to the narrative at hand. For instance, she discusses her involvement in administering breathalyzer tests but then veers off to recount the story of Jane and her boyfriend's journey, including their eventual engagement. It's akin to shifting abruptly from one narrative to another. There is an absence of coherence in the story; it feels disjointed. Despite its brevity, the author had the opportunity to create a more fluid and consistent storyline.
The book displays exceptional editing with no errors, making it remarkably well-crafted. Due to certain elements that didn't connect with me, I would give it 4 out of 5 stars.
I recommend this book to enthusiasts of mature romance and those who are at ease with themes of crime and murder.
